What Is The Difference Between A Goal And An Objective
The terms goals and objectives are often sound similar and both refer to an aim or desired outcome that a person or group hopes to accomplish. However, goals often point to a larger purpose, a long-term vision, or a less tangible result where the goals are the final outcome for the endeavor, whereas objectives tend to be limited by time, measurable actions with tangible outcomes that help you push towards the broader goals and progress to achieve it.
Goals relate to overall intention, strategic directions, purpose and motive for the event while Objectives are broken down to specific targets, event execution and evaluations so that one can measure the tangible results produced from the event.
Most of the time when it comes to goals and objectives for the event, people think they are creating goodwill for the audience. Yes of course but only having that intention may not help you to plan a great event. If creating goodwill with your clients will help you , then one should define how does it relate to your company’s’ goal. is this going to help the organization to bring in more sales, have more customer retention or introducing new products and services you have to offer, the events your are planning could be a Social cause activity, Corporate Seminar, exhibition or there could be n number of fantastic ideas but Many organizers throw themselves into event planning without having the clear purpose which is in line with the organizational goal. Vague goals can doom your events to failure with lack of clarity, lack of precisions and lack of priorities and without proper planning good investments become costly expenses.
Three important steps to keep in mind while goal setting :
- Plan well in advance: Always Take enough time to plan your event to make it a success and beware of any planning very closer to the event date which give higher chances for vague goals due to lack of preparations in the right way.
- Create Realistic Timelines : How long does it take to book the venue, who are the speakers, when to start the event marketing, who are the guests?, when will the MC start or the entertainment starts etc, all these has to be on your timeline and you should make sure you meet the deadline to achieve the goal.
- Set Achievable goals: Smart goals will help you prioritize your efforts. Having small goals and achieving them one by one will add up to the successful end result which means you can achieve smaller milestones along the way to reach any bigger goal.
